The LM386, a.k.a. JRC386, is a low-power amplifier chip. It is able to directly drive a small speaker, and is thus used in a number of battery-powered practice amp designs.
Models
| Chip Name | Min Voltage | Max Voltage | Minimum Output Power | Typical Output Power |
| LM386N-1 | 4 V | 12 V | 250 mW | 325 mW |
| LM386N-3 | 4 V | 12 V | 500 mW | 700 mW |
| LM386N-4 | 5 V | 18 V | 700 mW | 1000 mW |
Voltage reference trick
The LM386 has a self-centering output voltage. In other words, if there's no signal at it inputs, its output sits at half the supply voltage. Because of this, the 386 can be used as a source of a buffered bias voltage in stompbox circuits.
Used in
- Little Gem - portable amp
- Ruby Amp - portable amp
- Smokey Amp - portable amp
- Uglyface - distortion/noisemaker
